Because of the large number of combinations possible, it is important to realize the most common odds and probabilities in the game of poker. Although memorizing all the odds in the game is a long term process, there are some simple ones that are handy to know in many situations. This article will provide a good foundation for general poker odds and provide a few fun facts as well. Basic Texas Hold’em Odds

There are several basic but important odds you should know when playing Texas Hold’em. By knowing the proper odds, you can calculate pot odds, which is an important number that can help you decide whether or not a hand is worth playing. Listed below are some select hold’em odds for both the deal and afterwards.

Odds On The Deal

• Odds of being dealt AA: 220:1
• Odds of being dealt AK: 110:1
• Odds of being dealt AK suited: 330:1
• Odds of being dealt any pocket pair: 16:1

Odds On The Flop

• Odds of pairing one of your hold cards on the flop: 2.08:1
• Odds of flopping a set when you hold a pocket pair: 7.51:1
• Odds of flopping a four flush when your hand is suited: 8.14:1
• Odds of flopping a flush when your hand is suited: 118:1
• Odds of flopping four of a kind when you hold a pair: 407:1
• Odds of flopping a straight with two connected cards: 75.5:1

Odds From The Flop To The End

• Odds of completing a four flush by the river when your hand is suited: 1.86:1
• Odds of pairing either or your hold cards on the turn or river: 6.5:1
• Odds of completing to a full house when you have two pair after the flop: 4.97:1
• Odds of getting trips by the river when you have one pair on the flop: 10.9:1

These poker odds are particularly important in drawing situations such as with four flushes or four to an open ended straight. There are some other odds and numbers that you should keep in mind when playing. For example, when you hold a pocket pair of jacks, there is a 57% chance that an over card will fall on the flop. Also note an important statistic regarding aces. If you hold an ace in a ten handed game, there is nearly a 75% chance that someone else will also hold an ace! This is why playing with good kickers is so important. By committing these hold’em odds to memory, you’ll be in a better position to make the right move in close situations.

Selected Other Poker Odds And Some Long Shots

Lastly we have compiled a list of selected odds from all poker games and some real long shots that believe it or not happen from time to time.

• Odds of getting a royal flush in first five cards: 649,740:1

• Odds of starting with trips in seven card stud: 424:1

• And  to finish things off courtesy of “Crazy” Mike Caro, the odds of holding AA before the flop, four times in a row are 2,385,443,280:1. In a recent hold’em tournament at Pokerstars, the author of this article came half way to meeting this incredible milestone by getting AA two times in a row. He then promptly loss when on the next hand he received KK and lost to a strong opponent holding AA!
